The Other Side
A view like the one pictured above (featuring some of the tallest peaks in the range) is what people often associate with these mountains. That's Grand Teton in the center, of course. Middle and South Teton stand on the left. On the other side, it's Mount Owen and Teewinot Mountain. While the views from Jackson Hole are undeniably lovely, there is a flip side to the story: the western slope. This is the Quiet Side of the Tetons. In the Teton Valley you'll find the small communities of Victor, Driggs and Tetonia, along with lots of farmland. A slower pace. Peace and tranquility. As for the mountains? There's world-class skiing at Grand Targhee Resort. 500 inches of champagne powder isn't just an empty marketing tagline; they really mean it. If it's mountain scenery you're after, the Tetons look spectacular from the west. They don't have a "bad side." The terrain is different, with broad and gentle slopes extending from beneath the precipitous peaks down to the valley floor. Even with foothills, though, the Cathedrals make their presence known.
By the way, you can get up close and personal with these peaks from the "other side," too, if you're willing to put in some effort. No class 4 climbing required. At the top of the Table Mountain hike (the trailhead is located in Teton Canyon) you will find yourself face-to-face with Grand, Middle, and South Teton as well as Mount Owen and Teewinot. Another option is to charter a small plane. There are flight restrictions over the park, but you can get nice and close on the west. I won't lie - this is pricey, but if you're into aerial photography you'll enjoy it.
Last weekend it was snow sculpting, with the 13th annual Snow Scapes competition in Driggs. Prior to that, Tetonia sponsored its Snowplane Rally. Coming up in a few weeks, skijoring. Maybe the Quiet Side isn't so quiet after all! Speaking of snow sculpting, here's a sampling of some of the masterpieces in white: Comments
